TDA Partner Serves Up Farm Fresh Fun for Harlingen Children

A lunch featuring Texas-grown sweet corn, watermelon and butternut squash introduced children at a Summer Meals Program site in Harlingen to Farm Fresh fun and food. The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District’s (HCISD) school nutrition team served the meal to kick off their participation in the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Summer Farm Fresh Challenge in 2018. The corn was sourced from England Cattle Company in the Rio Grande Valley, the watermelon was from Wiggins Watermelons in Caldwell, and the butternut squash was from Terra Preta Farms in Edinburg. HCISD is one of TDA’s Summer Meals Program partners and the team completed all three challenge goals: Eat Local. Teach Local. Be Social.

In addition to serving local foods, the team provided lessons in nutrition and agriculture for families at mobile feeding sites. HCISD fulfilled the Be Social component of the challenge by sharing their events on their Facebook page.  HCISD Child Nutrition Supervisor Elizabeth Phillips said the #farmfreshfriday posts were popular in the community.

The 2018 Summer Farm Fresh Challenge took place from June 11-22 with 34 sponsors participating. For more information, please visit Squaremeals.org/FarmFreshChallengeSFSP.
