Pasadena Independent School District (PISD) successfully completed all the requirements of the first-ever Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Summer Farm Fresh Challenge. Through the TDA-administered Summer Meals Program, the PISD nutrition team served locally sourced foods, showed educational Farm Fresh videos (Farm Fresh Challenge Resource Page
) and promoted the Summer Farm Fresh Challenge via Facebook. That fulfilled the challenge parameters for participation — Eat Local
. Teach Local
. Be Social
Pasadena ISD served sausage and cheese kolaches sourced from Eddy Packing Co. in Yoakum, and low-fat milk from Texas dairies. Also, PISD hosted a “Try It” day, during which they encouraged summer meal participants to try locally grown watermelon from Ramos Farms in Cut and Shoot. Children received “I Tried Local” stickers (as shown in photo) as an incentive for trying the featured local foods. “Students really enjoyed the items we chose and we love promoting Texas products in our program,
” said Jodie DeFrancesco, PISD nutrition coordinator.” We are looking forward to achieving level three of the NSLP Farm Fresh Challenge this fall!
The 2018 Summer Farm Fresh Challenge took place from June 11-22 with 34 sponsors participating. For more information, please visit Squaremeals.org/FarmFreshChallengeSFSP
