Partnerships for Success: North East ISD and the San Antonio Food Bank

North East ISD participants and their families celebrated Farm Fresh Fridays thanks to a collaboration with the San Antonio Food Bank. Families that participated in the mobile café program during the summer of 2017 went home with a 10 pound bag of fresh, local produce weekly.

Many of the food items provided were grown just down the street at the San Antonio Food Bank’s garden. Produce was provided based on availability and seasonality. Each bag also contained healthy recipes with nutrition information to encourage families to try cooking less familiar fruits and vegetables.

Executive Director Sharon Glosson writes, “The objective for this program was to continue the messages of eating fruits and vegetables for the entire family, including adults."

Children may need a minimum of 15 exposures to a new food before acceptance. Programs, such as this one give parents and families confidence to serve new foods and continue to build healthy habits even when students are not in school.
