In October 2016, the Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA) Farm Fresh Team joined Rachel Spencer from USDA’s Southwest Regional Office and two representatives from the Sustainable Food Center (SFC) in Austin for Farm to School events at two Austin Independent School District (AISD) campuses.

The SFC Farm to School ambassadors greeted Elementary students at Sanchez Elementary with samples of confetti bell peppers from Johnson’s Backyard Garden – an Austin-area farm providing local produce to AISD. Many students liked the bell peppers and commented on how sweet they were! Parents on-site for National School Lunch Week celebrations were equally pleased to see AISD’s commitment to local products and to establishing healthy preferences early.

The next stop was Anderson High School for the launch of AISD’s latest food truck featuring Vietnamese cuisine. Reimbursable meals served from Nacho Average Food Truck include a rotation of chicken, pork, fish or tofu banh mi sandwiches with local pickled vegetables and a baguette specially formulated for AISD by Austin’s Texas French Bread. Students can choose from Asian style spinach, squash with a coconut reduction or banana tapioca pudding to round out their reimbursable meal.

Healthy options that replicate the fast food experience encourage Anderson High students to stay on campus  and enjoy delicious lunch options that support the local community.  Also, monthly rock shows put on by student bands enhance the experience!

Farm to School can be tailored to reach students of all age groups and your approach to Farm to School could benefit other schools. Please email your success story to LocalProducts.SquareMeals@TexasAgriculture.gov.
